Student Project: Interstate Water Compacts: Current Awareness
This research guide explores Interstate Water Compacts in the United States at both the federal and state levels. Specifically, it will explore the law of California, Arizona and Colorado.
Water in the West and partners convened a panel of experts with extensive experience in interstate river disputes to provide perspectives on the past, present, and future of interstate compacts in the management of rivers and water in the West at the Stanford Law School on April 17, 2014.
"The models will address a host of key issues existing compacts do not consider, including: the impact of water allocation on endangered species; tribal water rights; establishing a scientific advisory board to oversee the compacts; dispute resolutions to avoid litigation; and possible regulations and monitoring of groundwater and surface water."
