Michigan

Fracking, including high volume fracking that uses more than 100,000 gallons of fracking fluid occurs in Michigan. A lot of activity occurs in the northern portion of the state, but there are wells throughout. The type of fluid used and chemicals within it must be reported .

Hughes v. Dept. Envtl. Quality, No. 312902, 2014 WL 547648, at *1 (Ct. App. MI. Feb. 11, 2014).
Plaintiffs alleged that wells using hydraulic fracturing should be considered injection wells under the Michigan Administrative Code and thus subject to certain environmental regulations. The court ruled that the wells at issue do not fall under the scope of the administrative code definition of injection wells.

The Department of Environmental Quality Office of Oil, Gas, and Minerals oversees fracking operations in the state.
