Facts About Internet Resources

  • Remember that a lot of material is available freely online
  • Keep in mind official websites of agencies, universities, courts, states, and other legislative, executive, and judicial organizations
  • Learn to evaluate resources found online
  • Learn to identify the source of the information
  • who is the author
  • what are the author's credentials
  • determine the level of objectivity
  • establish the date of publication
  • when was the website last time updated and how often is the website updated
  • verify the information found
  • remember that some sites, like Wikipedia, can be altered by anyone
 

The Invisible Net

  • Google and Yahoo are estimated to cover only 3% to 34% of documents available on the Internet
  • Much of the Internet exists as the "Invisible Web", hidden from search engines for a number of reasons:
  • site requires registration
  • site is fee-based or licensed
  • site is behind a firewall or on an intranet
  • site is dynamically generated
  • Check for content on the Invisible Web
